Future Cities with Girton Grammar School

In 2023 we have been working with VCE Vocational Major students from Girton Grammar School on a hybrid Future Cities project. They have put together a fantastic article about the project that we would like to share with you.

“Girton Grammar School, in partnership with Bendigo Tech School and La Trobe University, has initiated an ambitious project that allows VCE Vocational Major (VM) students to envision and construct a sustainable future city named "Bendigo 2040." This collaborative endeavour encourages students to think creatively, critically, and collaboratively as they research, design, and build their virtual city experiences.

By integrating the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals and innovative technologies, students are empowered to become change-makers in their communities while gaining essential work-related skills.

Leading the "Future Cities Project" at Girton with the support and collaboration of Bendigo Tech School and La Trobe University is Girton Inclusive Education teacher, Mrs Yvette Shanley. Mrs Shanley has been actively involved with Bendigo Tech School since 2021 and is a member of the Advisory Board and the Community of Practice of STEAM Bendigo, hosted by Bendigo Tech.

Girton's partnership with Bendigo Tech School has yielded remarkable success in previous years. One notable accomplishment was the "Flat Pack Project," which aimed to address youth homelessness in Bendigo. The innovative solutions developed by Girton students have been integrated into industry practices, improving outcomes and making a positive impact. The success of the project also attracted international attention, with "City Studios," an esteemed program provider, adopting the project for university-level students, including those at La Trobe University.

"The magnitude of this project, being a huge focus of their VM studies, is something very unique; nothing like I have seen before at Girton," said Mr Nigel Vernon, Head of Inclusive Education. "The result of this project is a Showcase Event at Bendigo Tech, where guests will be immersed in the remarkable achievements of our students."

Girton's involvement in the Future Cities Project highlights the school's commitment to empowering students to tackle global challenges and envision sustainable futures. By integrating innovative technologies and collaborating with Bendigo Tech School and La Trobe University, Girton is equipping students with the skills and knowledge to become leaders in their communities.

Through projects like the "Future Cities Project," Girton continues to drive innovation and nurture the next generation of change-makers.”
